SD Association Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation

Celebrating Ten YearsThe SD Association increased the value, usefulness and longevity of consumer electronics 10 years ago with the introduction of the SD memory card.  The cards gave consumers added portability, upgradability and interoperability for thousands of consumer electronics and applications, including cameras, camcorders, mobile handsets and personal navigation devices.

SD Memory Card Market

In 10 years, SD memory card storage capacity has increased 8,000-fold, from 8 megabytes in 2000 scaling to 2 terabytes with the current SD specification, SDXC. SD is now the world-leading de facto interface for removable media with an estimated 2.5 billion SD memory cards shipped and nearly 80 percent market share.

SD technology achieved world-leading status by responding to market requirements for a staggering variety of consumer electronic devices while maintaining backwards compatibility. Market requirements prompted the first SD memory card, the miniSD form factor and the even smaller microSD memory cards.

SD Technology: The Next 10 Years

The SD Association is focused on promoting SD product market acceptance, specifically SDXC products and applications, and scaling to 2 TB storage and 300 MB/s bus interface speeds. With thousands of consumer electronics devices supporting the SD interface, potentially thousands more devices will support SDXC and hundreds of millions of consumers will enjoy SDXC benefits.
