The SD card is equipped with content protection technology (CPRM) for recording media developed and provided by 4C Entity, LLC which is a licensing organization established by IBM, Intel, Panasonic and Toshiba. This technology is enabling a commercial content distribution system for music, video, etc.

CPRM is used in the following cases, and there is a possibility that trouble may occur if Non-CPRM card is used on CPRM compliant host.

  1. Broadcast recording of digital broadcasting programs and one-seg broadcasting programs and taking them out to other devices (using the SD-Video specification)
  2. Save Chaku-uta and ringing tone data to SD card (Using the SD-Binding specification)
  3. Storing music data on SD card using SD-Audio Media Player and/or SD music compo (Using the SD-Audio specification)

CPRM has been implemented on all SD cards so far, but it was an option in the SD standard Version 6.1. For the purpose of distinguishing between SD card not implementing CPRM and SD card implementing CPRM, the following marks are newly defined, meaning that CPRM is not implemented. In the case of cards for the Japanese market, this mark is mandatory to show on the package and Web / Catalog, and in the case of cards for other markets it will be shown as an option.

Non-CPRM

In the cases like 1 to 3 above, the following example shows a case where a customer uses a card that does not implement CPRM.

For a host using the SD-Video specification

If CPRM incompatible card is used for CPRM compatible equipment, the following problems may occur.

  • Cannot record on SD card of one-segment broadcasting or digital broadcasting program.
  • Unable to take out one segment broadcast or digital broadcast program from the recorder or PC that recorded the program to the SD card, or an unexpected error message is shown.

For a host using the SD-Video specification

For a host using the SD-Binding specification

If CPRM incompatible card is used for CPRM compatible equipment, the following problems may occur.

  • Can not move music data of Ring Tone or Chaku-Uta Full from internal memory to SD card.
  • In the mobile shop, data written by SD-Binding on CPRM compatible SD card, can not be moved to SD card not compatible with CPRM.

For a host using the SD-Audio specification

If CPRM incompatible card is used for CPRM compatible equipment, the following problems may occur.

  • SD-Audio Media Player, music component and recorder etc. can not record on the SD card.
  • Can not take out music content recorded on the internal hard disk to the SD card.
